Hidden Braces Treatment in Los Angeles

If you need orthodontic treatment but wish to avoid the conspicuous appearance of braces, you’ll be glad to know other options are available. Alongside clear braces and the popular Invisalign, there is also a variety called “hidden braces.” Also known as “lingual braces,” these braces go behind your teeth, not in front of them. This variety of braces has a variety of pros and cons, like any orthodontic treatment.

At Best Brace Place, we understand that all good orthodontic treatment is oriented around giving you the best-looking smile possible. For this reason, we know that you may want a treatment that fixes your teeth without being too noticeable. If hidden braces are your preference, we are here to help.

How Do Hidden Braces Work?

In dentistry, the word “lingual” means “toward the tongue.” Lingual braces are applied to the side of your teeth facing your tongue. This means that you can smile without anyone even knowing they are there.

All brace treatments can take some getting used to, and you may experience some discomfort as your teeth shift. In addition, with lingual braces, there’s a chance the braces may hurt your tongue. However, you will avoid any chance of the braces rubbing against your cheek or lips, as can be expected with more standard braces. It’s also important to remember that, as they share space with your tongue, they will generally cause you to speak with a lisp.

How Do I Know if Lingual Braces are Right for Me?

Lingual braces are necessary for the same reasons normal braces are, usually for straightening teeth. During your consultation with our Los Angeles orthodontist, we will evaluate whether lingual braces are right for you.

In some cases, like if you have a particularly deep overbite, lingual braces may not be suitable for you.

Will My Oral Care Be Any Different?

Regular tooth brushing and flossing are different with any orthodontic treatment. However, you should still commit to brushing or flossing around the brackets and wires with lingual braces. Just because no one will see them does not mean they can get dirty.

What are the Advantages and Disadvantages of Lingual Braces Compared to Traditional Braces?

The advantages of lingual braces include:

  • Less Visibility: Due to their placement, almost nobody will be able to tell your braces are even there. Furthermore, any discoloration that comes with wearing braces will be permanently unnoticeable.
  • No chance of cheek sores: Your wires and brackets will not rub against the inside of your cheeks.
  • Results: Most patients who have had lingual braces have reported satisfaction with their results, and in some cases, they are even better than traditional braces.

The disadvantages include:

  • Cost: Lingual braces can sometimes be more expensive than traditional braces.
  • Discomfort: Many patients report a higher level of discomfort with this type of treatment.
  • Temporary Lisp: Most patients develop a lisp while undergoing this treatment.

If these options seem unappealing for any reason, the traditional brace option is always available. However, if you’re ready for an invisible treatment with improved results, hidden braces may be the answer.

What Can I Expect from the Process?

Hidden braces are slightly different from traditional braces in that the process takes a bit longer. In a standard braces treatment, individual brackets are placed separately, sometimes on separate appointments. With lingual braces, their unique position requires some creativity. First, impressions of your tooth are taken, so your Orthodontist can figure out the best way to approach the back of your teeth. Then, the brackets are cemented on the back of your teeth all at once.

Regular visits to your Orthodontist may be necessary to ensure everything goes smoothly during your treatment.
